Specialized MasterControl Staffing & Consulting Solutions
MasterControl consultants and administrators for Quality Excellence (Qx), Manufacturing Excellence (Mx), legacy-to-cloud migrations, and Validation Excellence. Contract, contract-to-hire, or direct hire for pharma, medical device, CDMO, blood and biologics, and supplement manufacturers.
HealthTECH Resources is a boutique recruiting firm that has staffed regulated healthcare IT since 1998. Our pharma manufacturing and distribution practice brings that recruiting operation to quality and manufacturing systems.
Speak to an ExpertWho Runs MasterControl, and Why That Shapes Hiring
More than 1,000 companies use MasterControl, and the center of gravity is the mid-market: the 200-person device maker, the regional CDMO, the generics plant, the blood center, the supplement manufacturer that just got serious about GxP. These companies rarely have a quality systems department. They have a QA manager who is also the MasterControl administrator, maybe one document control specialist, and an IT team that supports the platform without owning it.
That is the hiring problem in one sentence: when the administrator leaves, goes on leave, or gets pulled into a remediation, there is no bench. The job market for MasterControl skills is thin because most practitioners learned it on the job at one company and never left. We recruit from that pool, and from the larger pool of quality systems people who have run document control, change control, and CAPA on a configurable eQMS and can be productive in MasterControl quickly.
The MasterControl Platform
Asset Excellence
Calibration, maintenance, and regulated asset management, the newest suite and the one with the smallest talent pool
Manufacturing Excellence (Mx)
Electronic batch records, device history records, electronic logbooks, digital work instructions, recipe and variant management, review by exception
Add-ons
Supplier, Postmarket (complaints), Regulatory, Clinical, and Insights for analytics
Quality Excellence (Qx)
Document Control, Change Control, Training Management, Audit Management, Risk Management, and Quality Event Management (AQEM), which now holds deviations, nonconformances, out-of-specification results, and CAPA
Validation Excellence Tool (VxT)
MasterControl’s patented, risk-based validation tool that scopes customer testing to critical business processes, at initial validation and at every quarterly release
MasterControl is cloud-delivered with quarterly releases. A large installed base still runs the earlier generation of modules, on-premise or hosted, in the world long-time users know as InfoCards and routes, and is moving to the Quality Excellence modules a piece at a time. That migration is the single largest source of MasterControl project work right now.
Five Moments When MasterControl Teams Call for Outside Help
- The migration to Quality Excellence. Moving from the earlier modules to Quality Excellence is not an upgrade. Document hierarchies, InfoCard metadata, training matrices, open quality events, and years of audit trail have to be mapped into a different data model, and every SOP that names a route or a form has to change. Companies that treat it as an IT project stall; the work is mostly quality process redesign with a migration attached.
- The first Quality Excellence implementation. The platform is configurable without code, which tempts teams to configure first and map processes later. The result is a quality event workflow nobody follows and a document approval route with nine signers. Customers who say the implementation was rough usually mean process mapping was skipped. An implementation consultant who has done it before front-loads the mapping and keeps the configuration simpler than the vendor’s demo. Device makers have the added task of reconciling procedures with the QMSR, FDA’s ISO 13485-aligned replacement for the Quality System Regulation that took effect in February 2026, and the eQMS build is where that reconciliation lands.
- Quarterly releases and VxT ownership. MasterControl’s release cadence is quarterly and the Validation Excellence Tool exists to make each release validation a short exercise. It still needs an owner who understands the company’s critical business processes, reads the release notes, runs the risk assessment, executes the residual tests, and files the evidence. When that person is the QA manager, releases get deferred and the system falls behind.
- Manufacturing Excellence on the shop floor. Electronic batch records and device history records are where MasterControl meets production. Master template design, recipe and variant management, review by exception, operator training, and the interface to the ERP and LIMS are a different skill set from document control. Mx engineers who have taken a line live are the scarcest MasterControl profile there is.
- Integrations and reporting. ERP (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite), LIMS, and HR systems feed MasterControl and depend on it. Training records tied to HR, suppliers tied to purchasing, deviations tied to batches. The REST API makes the integration possible; the hard part is deciding which system owns which record. Insights and custom reporting for management review are a steady source of part-time analyst work.
MasterControl Roles We Recruit
Screened for what they configured, migrated, or validated in a production MasterControl environment, not for having used it as an end user:
- MasterControl System Administrator (Quality Excellence)
- Document Control Administrator or Specialist, MasterControl
- MasterControl Configuration Specialist (forms, workflows, quality event types)
- Quality Event Management (AQEM) Analyst: deviations, CAPA, OOS, nonconformance
- Training Management Administrator
- MasterControl Implementation Lead or Project Manager
- Quality Excellence Migration Specialist (earlier modules to Qx)
- Validation Engineer, MasterControl and VxT
- Manufacturing Excellence Engineer (master templates, EBR, eDHR)
- MasterControl Integration Developer (REST API, ERP and LIMS interfaces)
- Quality Systems Trainer and Change Lead
How We Work With MasterControl Customers
Most MasterControl needs are one or two people, not a team. The engagement model reflects that:
✔️ A fractional administrator, 10 to 20 hours a week, who owns releases, VxT, user administration, and the configuration backlog
✔️ A full-time implementation or migration consultant for the duration of the project, tapering to part time after go-live
✔️ A permanent hire when the company has outgrown the QA-manager-as-administrator model, with contract-to-hire if you want to be sure first
✔️ Hourly, approved weekly, no minimum commitment; remote by default, onsite for go-live and inspections
✔️ Profiles before contract; there is no fee to see candidates
Why HealthTECH?
We have recruited for regulated healthcare systems for 28 years, and the parts of that work closest to MasterControl are the ones we have done most: hospital laboratory systems, where transfusion services already answer to FDA; pharmacy systems; Lawson and Infor ERP at health systems; the HL7 and EDI interfaces that connect them; and the training, go-live, and documentation work that makes a new system stick. A document control specialist and a hospital application analyst are screened the same way. What did you build, what did you own after go-live, what happened when a change was requested that the system could not do, and can you explain it to an inspector.
What carries over: the recruiting machine that has kept hospitals staffed since 1998, a 48 to 72 hour shortlist, the hourly no-minimum model, and a network that already includes CSV engineers, ERP analysts, and LIMS specialists whose skills sit on both sides of the healthcare and pharma line.

MasterControl Consulting FAQs
Yes, and it is the most common request. A fractional administrator at 10 to 20 hours a week owns quarterly releases and the Validation Excellence Tool, user and role administration, document control support, and the configuration backlog, with hours scaling up around an audit or a migration.
Yes. Migration specialists who have mapped InfoCards, routes, training matrices, and open quality events into Quality Excellence, along with the SOP rewrites that come with it. We will tell you plainly that this is a process redesign project with a data migration attached, and we staff it that way: a migration lead plus a document control specialist, with validation support.
Yes, and they are the scarcest MasterControl profile. We screen for master templates built, batch or device history records taken live on a production line, recipe and variant work, and integration to ERP or LIMS. Expect a smaller shortlist and a longer search than for Quality Excellence roles.
Someone who understands your critical business processes and has time to run the release cycle every quarter. In most mid-market companies that is the system administrator, not the QA director. If no one in-house fits, a fractional administrator or validation engineer can own it.
Yes. Event types, workflows, forms, escalation rules, and the links from deviations to CAPA, change control, and training are standard configuration work for our MasterControl consultants. Keeping the configuration simpler than the demo is usually the advice.
Alongside them, usually after them. MasterControl’s services team configures and launches; our consultants sit on your side of the table during the build, then own the system after the vendor rolls off: releases, VxT, user administration, the configuration backlog, and the next module. For a migration or an Mx rollout, an independent lead who has done it elsewhere keeps the vendor’s standard playbook from becoming your process.
For production ownership, not exposure. Which suites they administered, what they configured, whether they ran releases through VxT, whether they migrated a site to the cloud, what they built in Manufacturing Excellence, and how they explained their configuration to an auditor. We also screen for the adjacent skill set: quality systems people who have run document control and CAPA on another eQMS and can learn MasterControl’s specifics fast. We say which kind each candidate is.
Yes. Contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire, including permanent administrators, document control specialists, quality systems analysts, and manufacturing systems engineers.
No. We place consultants and trainers who work for life sciences manufacturers and their internal teams. We do not offer courses for individuals.
